Bleak Future

American Reality isn’t just about the past; there are things that we have to tackle now in order to ensure our future doesn’t follow the same path as our history.

We know there are issues like global warming and the treatment of the LGBTQ+ community that need to drastically change if we have any hope at all of being a decent society 5 years from now. Most of us understand that our future is based on what we do now and we may already be too late to save ourselves.

The thing I want to focus on today is a bleak future that is more narrowed in its focus but, then again, covers a ton of situations we are facing today.

A future based on “The Handmaids Tale” – mostly the TV show and not the book. This show is amazing and is single handedly worth the Hulu subscription. From the first episode, you start seeing how the story plays out like a futuristic documentary and as the seasons continue, you start asking yourself if time travel is a reality. I mean, it almost has to be based on the way this show takes our past and uses it to show how history is going to repeat itself- only much worse.

The show is based on the 1985 novel by Margaret Atwood- who is a consulting producer of the show and even has a cameo in the first episode. (Side note- this is the lady that would be the time traveler.)

If you haven’t watched it- I highly suggest it. I’m not going to go into details about the show because this isn’t as much about the show as it is about how the show is already starting to prove it’s based on a future reality (again, brought to us by Margaret “The Time Traveler” Atwood- no other explanation.)

In the show, most women are nothing more than objects to serve men and have babies- there are women of a “higher class” who are wives but one step out of line and those women quickly learn their place. I’m not sure if you pay attention to the news or the way our society works but decisions and rights over a woman’s body is usually decided by older white men and in many parts of the world- women aren’t even allowed to leave the house without a man’s permission.

In this futuristic world, everything is ran by a group called “The Gilead” which is basically a religious cult that has grown to control what was known as The United States of America. The Gilead uses Christianity to control women, promote Islamophobia and even relocate African American’s to settlements (like the Native American’s from my recent post about The Trail of Tears.)

The Gilead uses Bible passages in the same way many Christians use them today and matches up with how they were used throughout our history. For a great example of this, watch “12 Years A Slave” which is based on a true story. The “holy book” has been used for centuries to gain power over anyone that wasn’t a white, straight male- that continues to this day and there is no reason to believe it will not continue (and get worse) in the future.

A point they make in The Handmaids Tale is how the women are told “Blessed are the meek”…but the rest of that verse is never mentioned and it’s illegal for women to read- even those of the higher class. This is a great way to use certain passages to back your views- in the future, those people aren’t allowed to read or research…most people today just choose not to.

Simply turn on the news and you will hear how our government is fighting for control over women and what they do with their bodies. Women get blamed for their own sexual attacks due to what they were wearing. And when you start researching “true” Christian women- you see that they match up perfectly with the compliant women from The Handmaids Tale- they follow the words from a fictional text- written thousands of years ago- to gain power then and edited thousands of times to continue to hold that power.

“I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man she must be silent.” 1 Timothy 2:12

“Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:22

“Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respects, not only to the good and gentle but also to the cruel”. 1 Peter 2:18

Verses such as those above were created and continue to be used to keep white, straight males in power and Christianity continues to be used to brainwash millions to allow that control to continue and even view it as “normal.”

While The Handmaids Tale shows a bleak future for women and minorities- it also shows a bleak future based on natural disasters caused by global warming and issues between the remaining countries left on the planet.

In closing, I wonder if generations hundreds of years from now, will look back at The Handmaids Tale as a documentary on their past the same way I look at is as a documentary of our future?

Here are a few quotes I like-

“Don’t let them suffer too much. If they have to die, let it be fast. You might even provide a heaven for them. We need you for that. Hell we can make for ourselves.”

“Nothing changes instantaneously; in a gradually heating bathtub you’d be boiled to death before you knew it.”

“A rat in a maze is free to go anywhere, as long as it stays in the maze.”

“Truly amazing, what people can get used to, as long as there are a few compensations.”
