1987 Topps

I guess you could say that I’m already cheating because the first card isn’t a card at all but an entire set

The first pack of cards I ever got was bought for me, by my dad, in 1987.

I was born in 1978 and my dad left within the first year of my life and I never saw him until 1987. He had been paying child support but, for some reason, he wanted to jump back into my life when I was 9 years old so he went to court to get visitations.

I was in the court room, asking my mom if random guys were my dad because I had literally never seen the man.

Visitations/weekends were granted and that probably lasted for a month or so until he just up and disappeared again- but during that time, he bought me a pack of 1987 Topps at a gas station in Harrodsburg, KY; funny how we remember things like that.

I don’t remember what specific cards I got in the pack but he was gone again and my mom picked up the slack of buying me cards from that point.

I never tried to build the 1987 set because I was a kid and didn’t really care about getting all the cards- but there were a handful of cards that you wanted to pull from a pack- Bo Jackson’s Future Star was a pretty big one at the time.

That set started me on the road that I’m currently on and it’s still my favorite set to this day- every time Topps reuses that style, I lose my mind!

I currently have an unopen set- as well as a set in a binder with the traded set and the O-Pee-Cee set. I still get out the binder from time and time and just look at the cards and so many memories come back to me.

It was loaded with rookies but, sadly, it was greatly over produced and some of the biggest names ended up using steroids and may never be in the Hall of Fame- so there isn’t much value there- but still my favorite regardless.

Cool little Commons4Kids note- the 1987 Topps set is the most donated cards we get- no I haven’t kept count but I can assure you that we get more 87 Topps than any other set because the amount we’ve donated is INSANE.

Love, Peace and Sharkyness
