Many Weight Loss Help Programs Are Actually The Opposite
While trying to find resources for my food addiction, I’ve discovered only ignorance.
With most of the “help” I’ve found out there, as with AA type programs, they are simply used to promote personal religious beliefs.
Food addiction is a mental issue- proven by science- but it seems the only way to help is by doing things like “believing in a higher power” or “giving yourself to a specific god” because you can’t beat this on your own.
And they aren’t just “religious” based but seem to be Christian based.
It’s sad and fucked up to use a scientific disease, like addiction, to fill someone’s head with ignorance and promote your personal religion or belief.
Even places like FoodAddicts.org are based on the “Twelve Steps” program pioneered by Alcoholics Anonymous. One of the “12 steps” is to literally acknowledge that you can only overcome your addiction due to a “higher power” and that you must give yourself over to their specific god.
On their website, one of the questions is “Is FA religious?” and they claim that “members come from many religious backgrounds, or none at all. We are not affiliated with any particular religion, ideology or doctrine.”
And then you click a link to THEIR 12-step program-
#2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
#3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood him.
#5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
#6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
#7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
#11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
#12. Having had a spiritual awakening…
Folks come to them for help who are NOT religious at all (their words) and they are not a religious based organization yet 7 of the 12 steps they promote are directly related to a god- their god; they try to get away with it by adding “as we understood him”- but those of us in that “none at all” category understand him as non-existent- so how do we do the program because I can’t/won’t do more than half of their steps.
These “programs” literally attack people at their weakest moments and help fuel the belief that they are worthless and can’t succeed on their own without the specific god they are trying to sell.
These places are not there to help you- there are there to prey on you at your weakest moments in the hopes of promoting their beliefs.
Most of these places claim that food addiction is based on physical, mental and spiritual while Sharketo promotes only 2- physical and mental.
You can be spiritual and use that but that is not required to be successful; I personal use meditation but it’s not to connect with a “higher power” but to connect with myself- I am the only hope I have. I must save myself.
